Unlike turnstiles that control a dedicated lane, interior doors open freely once a valid credential is presented. Door Detective ensures that only one authorized person passes through per credential — in the approved direction — without requiring additional personnel.

Stop Insider Threats Before They Walk Through the Door
Your access control system stops unauthorized credentials — but what stops an unauthorized person? Door Detective® from Smarter Security closes the blind spot at every interior doorway, automatically detecting tailgating, piggybacking, and direction violations in real time.
No extra personnel. No gaps.
» Tailgating into server rooms » Piggybacking at access-controlled doors » Anti-passback bypass » Unauthorized personnel loitering » Collusion-based entry » Door propped open undetected » Directional access violations » Insider threat physical access
Why Traditional Access Control Misses Tailgating in Data Centers
Credential readers verify who presented a badge. They cannot verify that only one person passed through. Door Detective fills that gap — instantly, automatically, at every door.

Real-Time
Detection & Alerting
Identify violations as they happen — tailgating, piggybacking, loitering, door prop, and directional violations — the Door Detective immediately triggers alerts to your access control system and video surveillance, enabling rapid response before damage is done.
Powered by Neural
Network Technology
Door Detective uses advanced neural network intelligence to accurately classify people and objects in real time — minimizing false alarms while maintaining precise detection accuracy across the demanding conditions of a data center floor.
According to IBM research, 60% of cyber attacks involve insiders — and physical access is often the first step. The Ponemon Institute estimates the average data breach now costs $4.45 million. Door Detective addresses the physical access gap that traditional IT security tools simply cannot reach.

How Door Detective Supports
Data Center Security Compliance
Door Detective helps data center operators demonstrate physical access controls required by the most demanding compliance frameworks — supporting your audit readiness without adding manual overhead.
SOC 2 Type II
Physical Access Controls
Door Detective enforces and logs every interior access event, including violations, across your facility. It directly supports Trust Services Criteria CC6.4 for documented physical access controls through the doorway.
↳ Supports physical access logging & monitoring requirements
PCI DSS v4.0
Req. 9: Physical Security
Every controlled doorway is monitored for single-person entry and physical bypass attempts in real time. Supports Requirement 9 mandating restricted physical access to cardholder data environments.
↳ Supports Req. 9.1 and 9.3 physical access controls
HIPAA
Physical Safeguards
Automated detection and a complete audit trail protect facilities that process or store sensitive patient data. Supports Physical Safeguards under §164.310 for documented and enforceable interior access controls.
↳ Supports Facility Access and Workstation controls
NIST SP 800-53
Environmental Protection
Every secured entry point is monitored, logged, and restricted without requiring additional security personnel. Supports PE-2, PE-3, and PE-6 controls for physical and environmental protection requirements.
↳ Supports PE-2, PE-3, and PE-6 control families
ISO 27001
A.7 Physical Controls
Unauthorized physical access attempts at interior doors are detected and flagged the moment they occur. Supports Annex A.7 controls for physical entry monitoring and information asset protection.
↳ Supports A.7.2 Physical Entry and A.7.4 Monitoring
FedRAMP / FISMA
Federal Physical Security
Interior access logging, real-time alerting, and occupancy monitoring are built into every deployment. Supports NIST 800-53 PE controls required for FedRAMP authorization in federal environments.

Security FAQs
Have a question not answered here? Our team is available 24/7 to help you find the right Door Detective configuration for your data center environment.
What is the difference between tailgating and piggybacking?
Tailgating occurs when an unauthorized person follows an authorized credential-holder through a secured door without the authorized person’s knowledge or consent. Piggybacking is similar, but involves the authorized person knowingly allowing the unauthorized individual to follow them — often due to social pressure, courtesy, or collusion.
Both represent serious physical security vulnerabilities. Door Detective detects both scenarios and triggers alerts immediately, regardless of whether the unauthorized entry was intentional or incidental.
How does Door Detective integrate with our existing access control system?
Door Detective is designed to integrate with your existing physical access control system and video surveillance infrastructure. It does not require replacement of your current platform — it connects alongside it, enhancing the intelligence of each door event with real-time occupancy and violation data.
Which Door Detective model is best for a data center server room?
For most data center server room applications, we recommend the Door Detective Classic, Plus, or SG model, depending on the doorway configurations. The Classic provides adjustable beams and anti-crawl protection, making it well-suited for standard server room doorways where precision tailgate detection (1.97″) and wide lane coverage (up to 98.4″) are needed.
For double-door entries, high-security colocation cages, or any environment where collusion among insiders is a specific concern, the SG model adds Sidegate® Detection and collusion-detection capabilities — the highest level of protection available in the Door Detective product line.
Does Door Detective require additional security personnel to operate?
No. Door Detective is specifically designed to provide automated protection without additional personnel. It detects and alerts on violations in real time, sending notifications to your existing security operations team through integration with your access control and video surveillance systems.
This means you can protect more interior doorways with your current team, reducing cost per secured entry point without compromising detection accuracy.
Can Door Detective support emergency lockdown scenarios?
Yes. All Door Detective models include lockdown capabilities, allowing your security operations team to rapidly restrict access across interior doors during an emergency event. The system can also be configured to respond to emergency status signals from your existing access control platform.
Supplemental access controls for Emergency Status are supported across all models, enabling automated responses to facility-wide security events without requiring manual intervention at each doorway.
What kind of warranty and support comes with Door Detective?
Door Detective comes with a full one-year warranty, which extends to three years through Smarter Security’s site certification and training program. Adding the preventative maintenance program extends warranty coverage by an additional two years, resulting in up to five years of protection.
Smarter Security also provides lifetime remote support and 24/7 phone support — meaning your security team is never alone if an issue arises. Extended five- and ten-year programs are available; contact us for details.
How does Door Detective support compliance audits?
Door Detective logs every access event, violation detection, and population count — creating an audit-ready record of physical access activity at each secured doorway. This event history supports compliance with SOC 2, PCI DSS, HIPAA, NIST 800-53, ISO 27001, and FedRAMP frameworks that require documented physical access controls and monitoring.
Because Door Detective operates as part of your integrated security platform (alongside access control and video surveillance), it contributes evidence across multiple control families in a single deployment.
